Circus

Butleigh School Childrens' Circus Update - Feb 25th 2009

Action is really underway!  We have taken Class 4 and Class 3 through a process of learning to juggle and experiment with and introduced other circus props such as poi, staff, rings, hula hoops, ribbons and unicycles.  They have also had a clown/drama workshop which we will build on as we get closer to the show.  The Class 3 and Class 4 pupils are now able to spend the next few weeks practicing the props they have enjoyed most and those which they have elected to use in the show, before rehearsals begin in a couple of weeks.  We are also planning to bring in performance poetry for these age groups.

This week it was Class Two’s turn.  We had the boys and girls try out some props, namely staff and ribbons, even managing to start choreographing a ribbon dance for the girls.

The children seem to really enjoy the workshops, (I particularly loved the clowning one, where the kids really let go and we had lots of fun!),  there is literally a buzz going around school about the Circus in June.  Many parents have caught the bug too, offering their services, asking to try out unicycles and even learning to juggle.  We have had offers of unusual skills for the performance from parents and other members of their family all keen to get involved and I really get a sense of how this circus is drawing people together and becoming a community event.  It is great to have so much support.

As the weather continues to improve, we hope for the children to be able to practice their skills during lunchtimes if we have some volunteer parent helpers, who may even have the opportunity to practice themselves during these times!
